Olivia, Peter and Walter Bishop investigate the strange death of a woman who had an even stranger child. The woman was pregnant for only hours, yet the baby she birthed was fully developed - and also aged 80 years in the span of a few minutes. Olivia asks Nina Sharp of Massive Dynamic for help. Olivia and Peter search for a serial killer who has ties to Walter's past. With yet another wild scene to start off the episode, "Same Old Story" brings some new elements to the table. The first scene depicts a pregnancy that occurs in just a few minutes, the process is both effective and gruesome but catches your attention quickly. It almost seems as if the show intends on a insane opening scene that will hook viewers and if this is the case surely it is working. Though the beginning half of the episode is full of clichéd lines, it is to be expected as this is just the beginning of the Fringe series. Just think about how the audience works – people talk about the pilot and then new audience members tune in to check it out, so the introduction has to happen all over again (and this is true of Fringe, with the ratings up several million for this episode over the pilot). There are a few interesting and new elements that are learned in this episode though they can not get in too deep at such an early stage of the show. The first is, Nina Sharp, the executive of Massive Dynamic, and FBI agent Broyles in a meeting together secretly discussing matters and seemingly in cooperation with each other. This scene helps to lay the foundation of the show letting viewers know that Massive Dynamics may not be as bad as we had thought.. but if this is the case, who is? So far what I think of the 80 Year Old Man Baby is up in the air, to be honest I was left very confused. It was a somewhat silly concept, though the writers managed to pull it off well, and somewhat realistically at the same time. The production level was nearly flawless which is to be expected of such a high budget show combined with the talented writing of JJ Abrams and his crew. My only complaint would be Josh Jackson constant sarcasm, don't get me wrong it can be funny and helps to develop his characters personality, however it may be overused. All complaints aside once the first half of the episode is over is when things start to really get interesting and some stunning developments begin. Anna Torv's acting is nothing short of great, and helps to bring some needed uniqueness to the show. It's great to watch her as she questions her movements and re-examine each case that her former partner and lover, Agent Scott, was involved with. It is clear that she is still shaken up over the events that have occured and that it is causing problems in her focus as she begins to believe that what has happened is a result of the relationship her and her partner had together. It is exciting to watch the way the remainder of the episode turns out. Though Josh Jackson has little function in this episode as an investigator in the murders, his role as well as his fathers role in the overall theme is beginning to stand out. Ties between William Bell and suspects of various crimes begin to turn up and it is obvious many of the events occurring are a direct result of his former experiments. The finals scenes of the show include a gun flaring chase between Olivia and the serial killer as well as a job offer to Olivia from Nina Sharp to work for Massive Dynamics. As it turns out, it is discovered that the serial killer needed to extract the thyroid gland from his victims in order to survive his advanced aging process and the link between him and the pregnancy in the beginning of the show was the result of the accidental pregnancy of who was to be his next victim in order continue his survival.
