S01E09




Episode Outline

A businessman, named Mr. Young, shows up late for a sales meeting. Once the meeting is done a butterfly enters the conference room and appears to cut Mr. Young. It almost seems as if the butterfly is made of metal. After a few minutes about a hundred butterflies appear and attack Young, which eventually leads him to fall to his death from his office window at Massive Dynamic.


Olivia, Walter and Peter head to New York to investigate Young's death outside of Massive Dynamic. Olivia sees her old partner, John Scott, in the crowd outside the crime scene. Nina Sharp tells Olivia that Young committed suicide and again offers Olivia a job. Olivia is convinced that there are things Nina isn't telling her.


Olivia sees butterflies vibrating in the pictures on Young's wall while she and Charlie Francis are searching Young's apartment. However, the butterflies still when she turns away and she thinks that it may be a trick of the eyes.


Walter tells Astrid and Peter that Young had some sort of synthetic compound in his brain as he regales them with stories of Peter's childhood.


Peter gets a call from an old female friend, who knows that he's back in town.


Olivia sees that Young wrote the word "monarch" (as in butterfly?) in his date book and she does some research. She then discovers a strange email from the dead John Scott, who provides her with an address: 1312 Labrador Lane. Olivia goes to the building. She finds several boxes with strange frogs.


We learn that Olivia sent the frogs to Walter's lab and she tells Charlie that she's been seeing John and she's afraid she's going crazy. She asks him if she can take some time off work. Olivia gets a call from Astrid who tells her that Walter thinks that Young jumped out of the window because of the frogs.


Peter meets his lady friend in a diner and we learn that she her name is Tess. She warns him that "they" can find him and hurt him. She warns him to leave Boston and he notices bruises on her wrists. He asks whether "Michael" made those bruises and she leaves.


Walter explains psychosomatic reactions to Olivia and Astrid (the ability of the brain to manifest symptoms). He tells her that the frogs secrete a compound, which could be a hallucinogen. Walter believes that someone gave Young the drug.


Olivia tells Walter that John led her to the warehouse with the frog and Walter says John's memories are still in her head. Olivia asks Walter to help her get rid of the memories


We see Peter following Tess and Michael to Tess' place when Astrid calls him to the lab. Peter returns to see Walter getting Olivia ready to go back into the tub. Walter tells Olivia to focus on his voice, which will tether her to reality.


Peter arrives at the lab and Olivia relives some of John's memories of their dates. Walter walks Olivia through some of John's other memories in order to see if John knows the cause of Young's death. Olivia sees a meeting between John, Young and two other men. Young and one of the men leave after concluding some sort of "deal" while John stabs the other man. Olivia screams to be let out of the tank.


Once out of the tank, Olivia goes to see Broyles about a lead provided in John's memories. She tells Broyles that she believes Young was killed for selling technologies to black market buyers and that he was part of an underground group that sold the hallucinogen, which can also be used as a chemical weapon. She tells him that they need full disclosure from Massive Dynamic and he says he'll do what he can.


Peter is back at Tess's place and jumps Michael as he leaves. Peter threatens Michael with a gun and tells him not to touch Tess again.


Nina Sharp provides some information about Young's project to Broyles and Olivia. Olivia realizes that the word "monarch" in Young's phone book is actually a phone number, which is the Latino guy from John's memory that left with Young. Olivia traces the call and sets off to pursue him.


The Latino is named George Morales, who is on the way to the airport. Morales realizes he's being followed and he runs off, with Olivia and Charlie giving chase. Morales eventually gets hit by a car.


Morales wakes up in the hospital and demands that Olivia protect him from Massive Dynamic. He insists that he didn't kill Young. He says that Massive Dynamic killed Young and is responsible for many things. He says that "the pattern" and all of the other incidents from the show are smoke screens for what Massive Dynamic is really up to. He calls William Bell the devil and demands protection in exchange for information.


Olivia goes to Nina Sharp's office, who insists that Massive Dynamic has nothing to hide. Olivia is convinced that Nina is hiding something.


Morales, meanwhile, is attacked and killed in his hospital bed by John Scott (who is glowing). A nurse enters and sees that Morales' throat has been cut. I believe that Morales died as a result of the psychosomatic drug.


Broyles tells Olivia that Morales is dead and while Olivia insists that Nina is responsible, Broyles warns her to tread lightly.


Olivia visits Walter's hotel room to tell him that she needs to go back into the tank. Walter insists that it's too dangerous and refuses to help her. He says that he needs time to develop a safer technique to retrieve the memories and he'll help her then.
